After photographing weddings in Chennai for over 11 years, I've seen the same mistakes happen again and again. Couples who booked on price alone. Couples who chose a photographer they never met in person. Couples who handed over their most important day to someone whose portfolio looked great but whose process was chaotic.
This guide exists so you don't make those mistakes. It's honest, it's practical, and it's written by someone who has been in this industry long enough to tell you what actually matters.
1. Portfolio Is a Starting Point — Not the End Point
Every photographer has a curated portfolio of their best work. What you need to understand is that a portfolio tells you the ceiling of what someone can do — not the floor. Ask to see full wedding galleries, not just highlight shots. How does the work look across an entire day? In bad light? During the chaotic mandap ceremony? During the reception speeches?
At Thulir Weddings, we're happy to share complete galleries from past weddings. That's confidence in consistency — not just the best-of moments.
2. Meet Before You Book — Always
A wedding photographer will spend 10–16 hours with you on one of the most emotional days of your life. You need to feel comfortable with them. Not just impressed by their work — genuinely comfortable with them as a person.
At Thulir Weddings, Naveen personally meets or video-calls every couple before booking. This isn't a formality — it's how we make sure the fit is right on both sides.
3. Ask These 5 Questions Before Signing Anything
- Who will actually shoot my wedding? — Some studios book you with the lead photographer but send an associate. Always confirm this in writing.
- What's your backup plan if you fall ill? — This is rare, but it happens. A professional has an answer ready.
- Can I see a full wedding gallery from this year? — Not just the portfolio. The whole day.
- How long will editing take? — Chennai photographers can range from 2 weeks to 6 months. Know what you're agreeing to.
- Do you have experience photographing my type of wedding? — Tamil Brahmin, Christian, North Indian, interfaith — each has unique rituals, lighting conditions and emotional moments. Experience matters.
4. Price Is Not Quality
The most expensive photographer is not always the best. And the most affordable photographer is not always the worst. What you're paying for is experience, consistency, process and trust — not just equipment or a name.
That said — be cautious of prices that seem too low. Wedding photography is a full-day commitment that requires years of skill development, professional-grade equipment, hours of editing and meaningful client communication. A very low price often means corners will be cut somewhere.
"Your wedding photographs will be the only thing left of that day after 20 years. Invest in them accordingly."
5. Read Real Reviews — Especially the Negative Ones
Google reviews are invaluable. Read the positive reviews for patterns — what do people consistently praise? Then read the negative reviews carefully — how did the photographer respond? A professional who handles criticism with grace and transparency is someone you can trust with your wedding day.
Thulir Weddings has over 100 Google reviews averaging 4.9/5 — and Naveen personally responds to every single one.
